How to remove mold in your kitchen

HOW TO REMOVE MOLD IN YOUR KITCHEN

Over the years, many clients of FastFix Restoration have asked us about mold and how to protect their houses from mold in their kitchens. Here are some tips-

  • Keep humidity levels low. This is the most important thing you can do to prevent mold growth. The ideal humidity level for a kitchen is between 40% and 50%. You can use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in your kitchen. If the humidity is too high, you can use a dehumidifier to lower it.
  • Ventilate your kitchen properly. When you’re cooking, make sure to turn on the exhaust fan or open a window to let the steam escape. This will help to prevent moisture from building up in the air.
  • Fix any leaks. Leaks from pipes, appliances, or the roof can all lead to mold growth. If you find a leak, fix it immediately.
  • Clean up spills and messes right away. Even a small amount of water can lead to mold growth if it’s not cleaned up quickly. Soak up spills with a paper towel or cloth, and then wipe the area down with a damp cloth.
  • Dry dishes and cookware thoroughly. Don’t leave wet dishes or cookware sitting out. Dry them immediately after washing.
  • Empty the trash can regularly. Stale food and garbage can provide a breeding ground for mold. Empty the trash can at least once a day, and more often if necessary.
  • Clean your appliances regularly. The inside of your refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven can all get moldy if they’re not cleaned regularly. Wipe down the inside of these appliances with a damp cloth every week or two.
  • Use mold-resistant materials. When you’re choosing materials for your kitchen, look for those that are mold-resistant. This includes things like countertops, flooring, and cabinetry.

By following these tips, you can help to prevent mold growth in your kitchen. Mold can be a health hazard, so it’s important to take steps to prevent it.

Here are a few more tips:

  • Use a dehumidifier in your kitchen during the winter months, when the air is drier.
  • If you have a garbage disposal, run it for a few minutes after each use.
  • Keep your kitchen cabinets and drawers clean and dry.
  • If you see any signs of mold, clean it up immediately.

Steps You Can Take After a Flood or Residential Water Damage Restoration

We understand- it can be a terrible sight when a homeowner unexpectedly finds water damage in their property. Furniture and other appliances and electronics can be destroyed as well as home structures can be threatened.

There are many reasons why water leaks occur, and many sources, like an overflowing toilet, a burst pipe, or other factors. But the most important thing is to get help immediately.

Call FastFix Restoration

After you have called a water restoration expert like FastFix, turn off the main valve or shut down the direct water supply. Also, while waiting for the Fast Fix team to arrive- take safety precautions before starting the clean-up process, like cutting off the electricity supply if the water is near the electrical outlets. Turn off the electricity through the fuse/breaker box and contact an electrician before trying anything else.

Take First Emergency Steps to Extract Water

After turning off the power, you should assess the area and look for structural damage to your house. Place a bucket underneath the leak if you see water dripping from the ceiling. If you see sagging floorboards or sagging ceilings, stay away from them, and wait for the professionals.

Once you feel the property is safe,  take the following steps:

  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture.
  • Use a wet vacuum, mops, and fans to remove as much moisture as possible.
  • Turn on the AC to dry off the area if it is during the summer.
  • Take all your belongings and move them to a safe place.
  • Take all art objects from your walls and floor and move them to a safe place.
  • Gather loose items from the floor.
  • Remove wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Pull away colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Collect all the loose items from the floor.
